What to expect when you consult a herbalist

Updated: Feb 16, 2023

Each of us experiences ill-health in individual ways and each of us has a unique medical history. This means that no two patients seeing a herbalist will be given the same herbal prescription - treatment is tailored to your individual needs.

For your first appointment you should allow at least one hour.

This gives us time for an extensive discussion of a your current health.

When you come to see me for a first appointment we will explore your current health concerns and your medical history. I will need to know about any prescribed or over-the-counter medications or supplements you might be taking. I usually take pulse and blood pressure readings at a first consultation. I may carry out other examinations such as listening to your chest, or testing a sample of urine if they are appropriate. We will talk about the foods you eat, whether you take exercise, your work situation and anything else that has an effect on your health and well-being. Together we'll work on ways to support you towards your health goals.

A follow -up visit is usually arranged for two weeks after your first appointment, to assess progress and if necessary make any changes to the medicine or treatment plan. The follow-up appointments usually take about 30 minutes and further appointments, which are usually at 4 week intervals, are arranged as necessary so we can monitor your progress, and change your herbal prescription so that it remains appropriate for your changing needs and goes on helping you.

You will be given enough medicine at each appointment to last until your next one.
